The late quaternary paleoenvironment of Chile as seen from marine archives

چکیده
The Chilean margin provides a «natural laboratory» for the analysis of interactions between climate, geol¬ ogy, oceanography. and Sedimentation processes due to its extraordinary latitudinal gradients in environ¬ mental and geological settings such as topography, climate, tectonics, volcanic activity, oceanography, and onshore geology. North to south changes in topogra¬ phy are obvious from the comparison of latitudinal elevation transects from the coast (or even from the Peru-Chile Trench) towards the high Andes. High¬ est elevation contrasts are found in the northern part of Chile, where the Andes reach elevations of up to 7000 m asl (Figure 1). In combination with the PeruChile Trench caused by the subduction of the Nazca plate underneath the South American one, spectacular topographic differences of up to about 15 km resulted, which gradually decreased southwards. These exceptional topographic differences obviously result in large denudation rates and, as a consequence. high sediment supply to the Continental margin off northern Chile is to be expected. Besides this, the environmental setting on the mainland of Chile exhibits spectacular gradients in preeipitation from the hyperarid Atacama Desert in

Campanian and Maastrichtian Biostratigraphy and Paleoenvironment in Jorband Section, North of Iran
The study of planktonic foraminifera in Jorband section reveals two major events in Campanian- Maastrichtian boundary and early-late Maastrichtian bio-diversification. In this study, occurrence and species richness of planktonic foraminifera in Jorband area show the warm marine environment dominant during early to late Campanian and it could be correlating by tropical and subtropical biozones. ...
متن کاملPaleoenvironment, Biostratigraphy and Sequence stratigraphic studies of the Permian-Triassic boundrary of the offshore Persian Gulf, Iran: using an integrated approach.
Four supergiant and numerous giant gasfields have been discovered in the Southwest Iran which produce from Permian-Triassic carbonates belong to the upper member of Dalan Formation and Kangan Formation. In this research a detailed biostratigraphic, microfacies and sequence stratigraphic study of the late Middle Permian to Triassic successions was undertaken from 850 thin sections prepared from ...
متن کاملGeohistory Analysis of the Tabas Block (Abdoughi-Parvadeh Basins) as Seen from the Late Triassic through Early Cretaceous Subsidence Curves
The study area is situated in the Middle part of the Tabas Block. It contains outcrops of rocks that formed along longitudinal faults in Early Cimmerian orogenic phase. The basin subsided along these faults from the Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous, which include two sedimentary cycles. A sedimentary cycle, related to Upper Triassic to Bajocian is known as Shemshak group. Another sedimentary c...
متن کاملMonitoring of environmental changes of Tabriz plain at Quaternary sediments
Abstract Sediments provide a continuous, sensitive record of changing conditions of environment and processes within plain and in the surrounding plain, thus they contain significant archives of past environmental change on the continents. Valuable informations on regional and global scale patterns of past climate variability in the Azarbayjan region have been documented by numerous paleocli...
متن کاملSedimentology, mineralogy and sedimentary geochemistry of the Late Quaternary sedimentary sequence of Gavkhoni Playa by looking at the paleoclimate
The sediments of the Playa Lake are sensitive indicators of local climates that any change in climate, hydrology, and sedimentary environment will cause changes in the physical and chemical properties of the sediments. These sediments create a valuable and important archive with high resolution to examine these changes in the past. One method of studying climate change during quaternary and oft...
